Basic principles

The European schools were established with the aim of providing education, in their dominant language, to the children of staff members working for European Union institutions. They are not intended to be bilingual schools. However, families not employed by these institutions may submit an application for admission, which will be considered based on the category of the applicant and the number of available spaces.

Students who are admitted mid-course will be placed in the class corresponding to the level of education they have completed in their home country (see equivalence table link). They will be enrolled in the section corresponding to their dominant language following a test, which the administration reserves the right to administer.

Example: To join the English-speaking section, the student must demonstrate proficiency in the English language, both written and spoken.

Depending on their situation, students may be admitted into categories A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2, or C3. Admission rules vary according to category. A summary of the different cases is provided below. In this regard, priority is given to children in category A, then B, and finally C, in this order.

Category A1

  • Children of staff of the European Communities under agreement with the school:
EBA, ESMA, EUSPA, EUISS and European Commission
Cf. article 1 of the Convention defining the Statute of the European Schools
(category 1 pupils in type 1 European Schools)

Category A2

  • Children of staff of European institutions and European communities who do not have an agreement with the school ( CEB, ASE)
  • Children of staff of international institutions and organisations (UN, OECD, CIEC, OIF, OIE, OEPP, OIV, BIPM, OIML, BIE)
  • Children of the staff of the European School of Paris-La Défense

In categories C1, C2 or C3, priority will be given to:
