S7 Theater Outing: A Dive into the Absurd at Théâtre de la Huchette
On Wednesday, November 12, the S7 students, who are studying Rhinocéros by Ionesco in L2 this year, had the opportunity to attend a performance of The Bald Soprano and The Lesson at the famous Théâtre de la Huchette, a true institution of the Latin Quarter.
In this legendary theater, the two plays have been performed continuously since 1957, preserving for nearly 70 years the aesthetic shock experienced by the first audiences. The so-called “Theatre of the Absurd” can confuse, amuse, surprise, and sometimes even irritate — but above all, it encourages reflection, if one is willing to look beyond appearances.
For theater remains, above all, a mirror held up to the spectator’s consciousness. So, what do these plays tell us today?
This is what we will explore together in class in the coming days.
