OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS:

Entering S4 is a key moment in a student’s academic journey, as it marks the beginning of subject choices that allow for a more personalised curriculum based on interests, strengths, and future aspirations.

One of the main choices concerns mathematics, offered at two levels:

  • Maths 4P: the standard course (4 periods per week), covering all the essential topics of the curriculum. This option suits students who wish to build a solid foundation without necessarily specializing in mathematics.
  • Maths 6P: the advanced course (6 periods per week), aimed at motivated, curious, and diligent students who wish to deepen their understanding of mathematics and prepare for higher education in scientific, technical, or economic fields.

In addition, students may choose from a range of optional subjects to enrich their academic experience:

  • Art – 2 periods
  • Music – 2 periods
  • ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) – 2 periods
  • Economics – 4 periods, taught in the student’s second language (L2)
  • Italian as L4 – an introduction to a new foreign language

These optional subjects offer students the opportunity to explore new areas, express their creativity, or develop valuable skills for a variety of future pathways.
Students are encouraged to make their choices in consultation with their teachers, parents, and of course, based on their own interests and long-term goals.
The teaching team is available to support and guide each student through this important decision-making process, helping them to make informed and confident choices.

Entering S6 marks a new phase in the students’ academic journey, as they begin to specialise according to their interests and post-secondary plans. This stage combines compulsory subjects and specialised options, allowing each student to build a timetable that is both rich and coherent.

Compulsory Subjects

Some subjects remain mandatory for all students:

  • Language 1 (L1)
  • Language 2 (L2)
  • Mathematics, with a choice between:
  • Maths 3P (standard course, 3 periods per week)
  • Maths 5P (advanced course, 5 periods per week)
  • Ethics
  • Physical Education (PE)
  • Philosophy

In addition, the following subjects are compulsory if not chosen as specialised options:

  • History
  • Geography
  • Science, Technology and Society (STS)

Specialised Options

Specialised options are taught 4 periods per week, which is why they are often referred to as “4P options.” Students must choose at least two and up to four of these subjects to create a tailored academic programme.

While the list of available options may vary from year to year depending on student preferences, the School is committed to offering a consistent and diverse range of subjects, which always includes:

  • Biology
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Geography
  • History
  • Economics
  • Philosophy
  • Language 3 (L3): Spanish, German, Italian
  • Language 4 (L4)
  • Art
  • Music

Complementary Subjects

In addition to their specialised options, students may choose one or more complementary subjects, from the following:

  • Biology Lab
  • Physics Lab
  • ICT (Information and Communication Technologies)
  • Sociology
  • Art
  • Music

The student’s overall weekly timetable must not exceed 35 periods.
The teaching team supports each student throughout the decision-making process, ensuring that their chosen path is coherent, balanced, and aligned with their future academic goals.
